Maternal mortality is a serious issue, with 600,000 pregnant women dying each year - one every minute. 98% of deaths occur in developing countries, with 60% in Asia and 30% in Africa. The main causes are hemorrhaging during or after childbirth and giving birth without a skilled birth attendant. Only 34% of deliveries occur with a skilled birth attendant in poor countries, with even lower rates in places like Ethiopia, Chad, and Niger. Delays in recognizing and treating complications and delays in transfers to proper medical care often result from a lack of financial resources and poor access to healthcare.

Utilitarianism: Securing a women’s right to safe motherhood is a shared interest and benefits herself, her family, and society. Safe motherhood must be understood as a profitable investment.
